Overthinking and Reassurance

You just need to know you're okay, so you check, and for a moment you can breathe. This is the work of stepping out of the loop that feeds the very anxiety it seems to soothe.

You reread the message. You ask again, in a slightly different way, hoping this time the answer will finally settle it. You check the lock, the numbers, the wording, your own body, and each check buys a few minutes of relief. Then the doubt comes back a little sooner and a little louder than before, so you check again. From the inside it feels like diligence, like you're keeping yourself safe. From the outside you can feel it tightening around you, taking more and more of your day and giving back less and less peace.

The checking isn't the solution to your anxiety. It's the fuel. That's hard to hear and it's also the way out, because it means the thing you can change is right there in your hands.

What’s actually happening

Reassurance works for a moment, and that moment is the trap. Every time you check and feel better, you teach your brain two things: that the worry was worth taking seriously, and that relief comes from checking. The doubt then returns stronger, needing a bigger check to quiet it, and the loop tightens. This is why you can never quite reassure your way to lasting calm; the mechanism that soothes is the same one that feeds. The work is to break the loop by learning to let a doubt exist without answering it, so the alarm finally gets the information it actually needs, which is that nothing has to be done. The relief that comes from that is the kind that lasts.

The Checking Kit

This is the guided intervention for the reassurance loop. It helps you see the loop clearly and learn to sit with a doubt without feeding it, so the checking loses its grip. Includes a private audio walkthrough recorded by Lisa.
