Ambiguous Loss

Someone you love is here and gone at the same time. This is the room for grief that has no ending to reach for, and no permission that ever quite arrives.

The word people keep offering you is closure, and it doesn't fit, because nothing has closed. Maybe someone you love is physically here but changed past recognition, by dementia, by addiction, by illness, so you grieve a person who is sitting across the table. Maybe someone is simply gone, estranged or missing, with no confirmation and no goodbye, so you can't even be sure you're allowed to grieve. Ordinary grief has a shape: a loss, a ritual, a slow moving-through. This has none of that. It just goes on, unresolved, and everyone around you seems to expect it to end.

You're not doing grief wrong, and you're not stuck. You're facing a loss that genuinely has no ending, and that requires something different from you than moving on.

What’s actually happening

Ambiguous loss, a term from the grief researcher Pauline Boss, is loss without resolution, and it's one of the hardest kinds precisely because the mind keeps waiting for a closure that never comes. Without a clear ending, you can't complete the process ordinary grief runs, so you hold both truths at once: they're here and they're gone, or they're gone and maybe not. That both-at-once is exhausting, and the culture gives you almost no language for it. The work here isn't to force an ending onto something that has none. It's to learn to live alongside the ambiguity, to grieve what's been lost while honoring what remains, and to let go of the closure that was never going to arrive, so the waiting stops consuming the life you still have.
