Believing Yourself

You can see your competence on paper, and you still can't feel it from the inside. This is the work of building the self-trust that lets you believe your own read.

You know things, and you still wait for someone else to confirm them before you'll act. You make a good decision and then spend the night auditing it. You've built a real record of capability, and some part of you is sure it's a fluke that's about to be exposed. When someone praises your work, you hear the one qualifier and discount the rest. It's exhausting to be competent and unconvinced of it at the same time, to carry evidence you refuse to admit into your own court.

This isn't false modesty, and it isn't a lack of skill. It's a gap between what you can do and what you can let yourself believe about what you can do. That gap has a shape and an origin, and it closes. Not by collecting more proof, because you already have proof and it hasn't worked, but by learning to trust your own read of it.

What’s actually happening

Self-trust and the ability to internalize competence run on the same mechanism, and both can be worn thin early. If your read on reality was often corrected, overruled, or treated as less reliable than someone else's, you learned to outsource the final verdict, to wait for external confirmation before you'd trust what you already knew. Imposter feelings are that same outsourcing wearing a work costume: the accomplishment is real, but the internal authority that would let you own it was never handed to you, so success feels borrowed and exposure feels imminent. More evidence doesn't fix it, because the problem was never a shortage of evidence. The work is to rebuild the internal authority that lets you believe your own competence without a second signature.
