Depression Behind Functioning

You look fine on the outside and you're running on empty underneath. This is the room for the depression that hides behind doing everything right.

You get up, you go to work, you answer the messages, you show up for the people who count on you, and by every visible measure you're fine. No one would guess. Underneath, though, you're running on fumes, performing a life you can't quite feel, and the effort of looking okay is its own exhausting full-time job. The cruelest part is the argument you have with yourself: you're clearly still functioning, so what right do you have to feel this bad. Other people have real problems. You should be grateful. You keep going, and the gap between the competent outside and the empty inside just widens.

Functioning is not the same as being okay. You can do everything right and still be quietly depleted, and the fact that you're still standing doesn't mean you don't need care. It usually means you've been carrying this alone for a long time.

What’s actually happening

Depression doesn't always look like being unable to get out of bed. It often looks like getting out of bed, and doing all the things, while the inside runs empty. Since you're still functioning, no one flags it, including you, so it goes unnamed and untreated far longer than more visible depression would. The energy it takes to maintain the competent surface draws down the little reserve you have, which deepens the depletion, which takes more effort to hide, a quiet spiral hidden in plain sight. The belief that you have no right to feel this way because you're coping keeps you from getting help, which is exactly what keeps it going. The work here is to let the private truth count as much as the public performance, to stop using your own competence as evidence against your pain, and to let some care reach the person underneath the functioning.
